Biography

Greg McKinney

By day, I work in the business world helping companies improve their operations through the use of Information Systems and Technology.

But, photography has been an interest of mine since I was 12 years old growing up in a suburb of Chicago.  My first photography instruction came from my Scoutmaster and Photography Merit Badge Counselor, Ray Clutts.  The first fine camera I ever used was the one he lent me, a Canon IV Sb (a 1950's era 35mm rangefinder).  The first time I saw the those vivid colorful Kodachromes I took projected on to a screen, I was hooked.  I had to learn more about Photography.  I read every book and magazine I could get my hands on.  My parents were totally supportive throughout this whole process.

My first darkroom instruction came from my fellow students in my Junior High School Camera Club.  The first time I saw an image appear in the developer tray under a orange safelight, I was astonished.  Pure magic!

In High School, I took a yearlong photography class and worked on the yearbook with a supportive and encouraging teacher to whom I owe many thanks, Ken Kinney.  Mr. Kinney, an artist first and photographer second, taught me a lot about composition, color, line, shape, and texture.

Over the years, photography has been my hobby, passion, and diversion.  My wife made arrangements for me to study with Alan Ross at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico (May 2001).  Alan is an exceptional photographer and a gifted teacher.  I would highly recommend Alan's workshops to anyone interested in taking their photography to the next level.

My wife also signed me up to participate in the symposium commemorating the 100th anniversary of Ansel Adams birth.  The symposium was held in June 2002 in Yosemite.  I met many superbly talented photographers at the symposium.

My photographic influences include: Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Eliot Porter, and Minor White.  Of the current generation of great photographers, I admire the work of Alan Ross, Christopher Burkett, Mark Citret, John Sexton, and Mark Nouillan.

I live in San Francisco with my wife, Nancy, and our two cats, Sadie and Sydney.
