Scotland: Visions in Monochrome

Photographs by Mark Nouilland

The Artist

Mark Nouillan is widely considered to be Scotland's foremost fine-art landscape photographer.  This exhibit features some of his finest black and white landscape photography from his native Scotland.  Mark is now residing in the Northern California Sierra foothills, close to another of his favorite locations - Yosemite.

As you will see from Mark's style, it will come as no surprise that he has been described as the new master of black and white photography. He follows in the footsteps of the great past masters of this photographic medium, most notably the renowned Ansel Adams and Brett Weston, both of whom sought, through their dedication to the art of photography, to achieve the ultimate in quality and artistry.

Now Mark continues in that same vein. From the release of the shutter on his 4x5 large format Sinar camera, the attention to detail continues throughout the entire process until the final work of art leaves his darkroom.  All works are completed to the highest archival standards and come with his unique 100 year guarantee.

To call Mark Nouillan passionate about his photography seems an understatement. From the mystical standing stones of Callanish on Scotland’s Outer Hebrides to the awe-inspiring sunset on Half Dome mountain in Yosemite National Park in California, Mark has an unparalleled desire to photograph the breathtaking images he sees. Through his photographic lens he records moments he feels he must share with others and hopes to encourage us all to take a closer look. Mark’s passion for photography has become his whole ethos in life.

A protracted near-death experience in his teens proved to be his catalyst for living life to the full. Now in his mid thirties and with a profound sense of gratitude for life and the intensity of feelings that produces, explains the photographer’s sense of vision and wonder at seeing something new for the first time, every time.

Following a prestigious career in photojournalism where he learned his craft under the guidance of some of Scotland’s finest photographers, many notable awards followed. Among the many accolades Mark has to his credit is Scotland’s Young Photographer of the Year in 1990, in addition to Royal Photographer, Sports Photographer and News Photographer of the Year in Scotland in the years that followed.

Mark’s landscape photography only came to the fore when he bought his first large format camera in 1990. Continually striving for photographic perfection, he captures the essence of each image then translates that in the darkroom, resulting many hours later in the finished print. He has now produced his finest collection of Scottish and American images which he will be launching on this website.

Many icons of the photographic fraternity have influenced this young Scot. Notably American landscape photographer, Brett Weston, and his father Edward Weston. The American landscape certainly has had a profound bearing on Mark, as his latest collection of prints from Yosemite, California illustrates. Celebrated greats like Ansel Adams and the F64 Group have also proved an inspiration as he travels extensively to view for himself the breathtaking scenes he once saw only in books.

The West Coast of America has become such a dominant factor in Mark’s photography, he is spending an increasing amount of time in the U.S.A., while concentrating on producing his most challenging work to date. Foreign travel remains important as there are many wonders of the world he has yet to explore.
